SKIPPING CHRISTMAS by John Grisham

SKIPPING CHRISTMAS by John Grisham

Grisham, J. (2001). Skipping Christmas. New York: Doubleday.

GENRE: Fiction - Holiday

ANNOTATION: With their daughter overseas, Luther and Nora Krank have decided to skip Christmas in lieu of a Caribbean cruise but can they really just skip this unstoppable force?

SUMMARY: When their daughter Blair joins the Peace Corp and heads off to Peru, Nora and Luther Krank realize that Christmas - just around the corner - won't be the same without her. After looking at his finances Luther realizes he spent over $7,000 on Christmas the year before. After dreaming of a tropical vacation, he pitches the idea to Nora. They would skip Christmas completely, save the time, effort, and money and leave instead on Christmas day for Carrbbean cruise. But Nora's hesitant. How can they skip Christmas? No party, no decorations, no fruitcakes, no presents, and no hassle. Nora is finally convinced but they will have to dodge the neighbor's who always decorate, the firemen selling calendars, the boyscouts selling trees, and everyone expects their annual Christmas Eve party. Can they really do it? Depite the pestering and disbelief from neighbors and friends, they make it to Christmas Eve. But when they get an unexpected phone call, everything must change.

EVALUATION: 3 - The extreme pomp and circumstance of Christmas with the Kranks and their neighborhood seems unrealistic and borders on annoying but is, however, relevant to the story and brings comedic value. Despite being a bit silly, it's a heart warming story of what Christmas is all about.

OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION: The 2004 movie, "Christmas with the Kranks" is based on this book.
